Dr. Sharon Rabb has an unbounded commitment to provide the necessary skills and knowledge to facilitate individuals in achieving optimal health while looking and feeling years younger. Dr. Rabb is both a naturopath and a clinical nutritionist specializing in all chronic conditions in her private practice. Her first degree was in public health clinical nutrition and biochemistry from Tulane Medical School. Her second degree was naturopathic medicine. Dr. Rabb is located in Texas but sees patients world-wide via internet and phone. She explains that chronic disease is an epidemics of nutritional starvation with the resulting toxic overload. Thanks to all who showed up for Saturday's luncheon. What a wonderful time of sharing, fellowship and gluten-free food! I had a wonderful time as I hope you did.

Due to our meeting date being so close to Thanksgiving holidays, the NTX Lyme Support Group will not meet in November, but will hope to see everyone in December for our Christmas Celebration! We will have lots of fun! Bring a wrapped gift under 10 dollars for a gift exchange!

As mentioned at our September meeting, Patti is stepping down at the end of December. I have greatly enjoyed working with her in 2011. She has been a great asset to the group. However, to keep the group thriving and moving forward in 2012, we are in need of 2-3 facilitators to assist in running our group. Ours is the only active Lyme group in our area and many need the support and education that is provided by our group, but it can't be done by one person alone.

NTX Lyme Support is the only one in the metroplex and surrounding areas. CO-FACILITATOR NEEDS:

Will plan & facilitate 3-4 meetings per year, with the Facilitator's (Martha) assistance.(Depending on number of facilitators)
Commit to attend 9 out of the 12 meetings.
Will assist other facilitators when needed.
Bring in 1-2 speakers per year: LLMD, nutritionist, therapist, or other.
Attend facilitator's/board meetings, only 2 per year.
Work as a team for the benefit of the NTX Lyme Support Group.
Must be a believer in Christ as this is a bible-based group.

It’s official: SB1360 is now the law of the land! Governor Perry signed it (and also our identical “backup” bill, HB2975) on Friday. Attached is the final, signed version of the bill(s) which is identical to what was passed out of the House and Senate

Special thanks to everyone who contacted the Governor and their legislators about this bill. And congrats to all of us who worked on it – it was definitely a team effort! Later this year or early next year, the Texas Medical Board will begin the rule-making process and we will be involved in that process to make sure that the rules for approving Continuing Medical Education (CME) courses are fair and appropriate.

Meanwhile, we really need to encourage ILADS and the other thought leaders on our side of the debate to expedite the development of more Lyme-literate CME courses so that we have a wide range of course options that can be included on the approved list. This is a great opportunity for our side to put its money where its mouth is regarding the advancement of the medical science. I am confident that we can rise to meet this challenge, but it will take a concerted effort – including more involvement in and financial support of ILADS – to move the needle.

There was so much info I wanted to give you, yet not enough time. We will have to discuss more at another meeting; possibly even share recipes at another meeting.

Speaking of recipes--I am attempting to put together a NTX Lyme Support Group recipe book. If you have any allergen-friendly recipes that you would be willing to send to me at paschalltwin@yahoo.com, it would be greatly appreciated. We are hoping to raise funds for the group once the book is complete. This will help us provide more for you.

I will be posting the Almond Butter Brownie recipe under "Recipes and Restaurants" at the top of the page. This time I will leave out the Talapia. (Laughing) A list of foods we sampled will also be posted here.

I will be sending out an Evite within the next week for our next meeting. As we continue to ask, please respond to the Evite promptly. If you are unsure whether you will be able to attend, choose 'maybe". This will help us get a head start in our planning for next months meeting. Attending the meetings is a commitment, but we understand that life and illness can get in the way of our commitments. Try to commit to coming when you can.

Bill Update

The House version of our bill, HB2975 just passed out of the Senate Health & Human Services Committee favorably and has been placed on the Senate’s Local & Consent Calendar. As planned, Senator Harris offered a committee substitute that included the additional language we requested requiring the TMB to use a stakeholder process to set the rules for approving CME courses. By placing it on the Local & Consent Calendar, I believe it has a good chance of passing the Senate quickly. After that, I believe it heads back to the House for concurrence from Rep. Hunter and then heads to the Governor.

The Senate has already passed an identical bill, SB1360, but it is tied up in the House. It might still get through.... But now we have two identical bills – one in both chambers – which significantly improves our chances of getting one of them passed.

Our bill was also added to HB1013 (the larger TMB reform bill) which is currently awaiting a hearing in the Senate H&HS committee. It’s unclear whether or not it will get scheduled for a hearing by Senator Nelson. I understand that efforts are underway to add it as an amendment to another bill in the Senate which might improve its chances.

CSHB 2975 has been scheduled for debate on the Daily House Calendar on Saturday, May 7. I’m not sure what time they’re convening and if they take the bills in order. Rep. Hunter will be introducing an amendment to the bill during debate to add some language that was accidentally omitted from the Committee substitute. We are hoping that he will also engage in a bit of scripted Q&A with another Rep. to establish legislative intent for the bill – namely, to let the TMB know that the legislature is serious about them laying off Lyme doctors.

I don’t think it does much for all of us to attend on Saturday. Members don’t really pay much attention to the gallery during debate. You’re not allowed to hoot and holler or cheer for or against a bill. So I’m not recommending that everyone show up for it.

Now is the time to call your State Representative and ask them to support HB 2975. To find out who your State Rep is, visit this website < http://www.fyi.legis.state.tx.us/ >, enter your address and be sure to select “House” under the “District Type” pop up menu. Call the number on the website for the Capitol Phone, and say something along the lines of:

“Hi, My name is _______ and I live in Representative ______’s district. I’m calling to ask him/her to support House Bill 2975 which is scheduled for floor debate on Saturday. I have Lyme disease and this bill will really help me get access to quality medical care here in Texas. It’s an agreed bill with no opposition so I really hope that Representative ____ will vote for it. Thank you!”

Once passed by the House, it will move back to the Senate for a floor vote. Keep your fingers crossed!

Important Update on SB 1360

I know that these posts must be getting old, but I am writing you once again to ask for assistance in help us get Senate Bill, SB 1360, and House Bill, HB 2975 passed so that the state of Texas will recognize Lyme disease and treat it. Your efforts will change the course of many lives.

It has already been addressed in the Senate Health and Services Committee and the House Public Health Committee, but now we wait to see if Senator Nelson is going to schedule a date to vote on the bill. We need to push for putting it on the calendar so soon.

Here are the steps we (the Lyme patients in Texas) need you to take. It will take less than a minute:

CALL SENATOR NELSON"S OFFICE (even if you called before the hearing):

The Texas Senate committee met on (SB 1360 by Harris) on April 26, 2011, around 6:30 pm, for a Public Hearing in the Senate Health and Human Services Committee by Chair Jane Nelson. It seemed to have been received well. They still need to vote it to the Senate floor. Continue to write and call.

The Do's and Don't of Speaking to our Texas State Senators and Our Representatives

If you wish to write, call or speak at the hearing without causing our Senators and Representative to want to stick their fingers in their ears, here are a few suggested Do’s and Don’ts:

DO write your speech in advance and time your self speaking in front of a mirror to make sure you do not exceed the 3 minute limit.
DO tell your story (briefly) about Lyme but remember that the point of the public hearing is not just to tell the Committee about your suffering. You should focus the majority of your time on explaining why this bill would make things better for you and for other Texans suffering from tick-borne disease.
DON’T go into a lot of details about the medical science of Lyme, the various ways to treat it, the differences between the IDSA/ILADS protocols, etc. Most of the committee members have no medical background and you will only bore/alienate them if you talk in complicated terms about the disease.
DON’T go into a lot of detail about the IDSA vs. ILADS debate. Mention it if you’d want, explain that the patients lose when only one standard of care is accepted, and move on. We do not want to draw too much attention to the debate about the medical science, lest the IDSA feel compelled to lobby against this bill. (So far, as far as we can tell, this bill is NOT on their radar – but that could change).
DO mention that you believe the bill will increase access to quality care for Lyme victims because it will allow more doctors to treat without fear of being investigated and disciplined by the TMB or TNB.
DO thank the Texas Medical Association for their help with this bill.
DON’T DON’T DON’T go into what I call the “black helicopter” conspiracy theories about Plum Island, bioweapons, intentional government infections, etc. You (and our bill) will be dismissed as wingnuts.
DON’T talk about larger reform of the Texas Medical Board as has been proposed by House Bill 1013 which has been pushed by Dr. Hotze out of Houston. That bill is very controversial and we have nothing to gain by hitching our horse to that wagon.
DON’T beat up too much on the TMB for how they’ve treated docs in the past. We all know they have been bullies, but their Executive Director, Mari Robinson, will be there in the room and will be asked to speak and our preliminary intel indicates that she is not opposed to this bill. So if we make too much noise about how evil the TMB is, then it will put her/them on the defensive and she/they may work against our bill. If you want to talk about TMB oppression (it’s a valid topic), try to qualify it by saying “in the past, the TMB did X, Y and Z” or “previous TMB administrations were very hard on Lyme docs” so that it looks like we’re addressing her predecessor’s actions.

Great news! Senate Bill 1360 has been scheduled for a public hearing before the Senate Health & Human Services Committee on Tuesday, April 26, 2011. The meeting will be held in the Senate Chamber starting at 9am. SB1360 is the fifth bill on the list, so will likely be heard before lunch.

We have a bill (Senate Bill 1360) that is on the records that will give doctors more freedom to treat Lyme patients without fear of being reprimanded or shut down by the medical board. Please, take an hour to email and call all your representatives offices. This could make a difference in all of our lives. Imagine the doors that would be opened if this bill is passed--more doctors, more research, more treatments!!!

Unfortunately, we are going to have to bombard them with emails and phone calls in order to bring this bill to their attention--my father spend 3 hours emailing, faxing, and calling many of the representatives of the state of Texas; Perry Fields, US track runner who has Lyme, is going to post my request on her next newsletter; I am going to call all the as many Senators as I can; Patti is calling and email all the Senators; and we are both trying to get the word out. Can you help us? Many have spoken to Senators that are on the health committee that weren't even aware that this bill was coming down the pike. This is the time to stand up and make a difference. TX House Bill 1013 - 82nd Legislature Regular Session

We ask that you support this bill.

One important aspect of H.B. 1013 which the Lyme bill alone cannot accomplish, however, is that when the TMB goes after a doctor, they often do so for trivial reasons, such as minor record keeping violations which would be ignored for anyone else. The complaint usually doesn't even mention Lyme disease at all -- with the exception of the LLMD in Denton last year -- because the TMB can harrass doctors with trivial charges and cause them to go bankrupt defending themselves. The secrecy (aka: confidentiality) surrounding TMB's Informal Settlement Conferences is tantamount to a Kangaroo Court system. This corrupt system must be changed by revising our statutes through passage of H.B. 1013.

In other words, all the legislation in the world aimed at the diagnosis and treatment of tick-borne diseases will not do any good if the current corrupt practice of secret (codeword: "confidential") charges continues to be the basis for complaints that are filed by anonymous complainants.

The passage of both bills is important if Lyme patients are to be properly diagnosed and treated here in Texas in the future.

Well, 2011 if finally here! For some of us it is a new beginning on this journey of Lyme treatment, for others it is only marks another day that you have been fighting this disease, and for the rest it is celebration of progress made in your treatment. We at EFW Lyme Support want to help you through your journey, and wish to provide you with resources and information that will help in the fight against Lyme. We invite you to participate in our group meetings every third Saturday of the month. Let's make 2011 a great year as we support and encourage one another!

Celebrating Christmas With EFW Lyme Support!

Thanks to all those who attended Saturday's Christmas celebration meeting. For those who couldn't attend, you were missed! A great time was had by all through wonderful, entertaining fun and enlightened conversation.

As we are moving into the new year and as we continue to grow, we are looking forward to what 2011 will bring for EFW Lyme Support. We hope to have various Lyme literate speakers join us in the upcoming year to offer information and education about the numerous options of treatment for Lyme. Education & knowledge is powerful!

We strive to make a difference in the lives of those suffering from Lyme. Please join us as we begin our journey in 2011. Registration is required. Please attempt to be on time. For Lyme patients with neurological issues, be aware that it can be distracting to them when others walk in while they are speaking. Please be respectful of their time at the meeting. However, we understand that there are many who are traveling farther than many of us and may run into traffic, and others who have difficult circumstances. Please, do not let being late keep you from coming. We understand and want you to attend.

Lyme Support Group Coming to East Fort Worth

We have been working diligently to form a Lyme Support Group in the North Arlington/East Fort Worth Area. This group will be formed to provide Lyme patients or family members dealing with family or friends who suffer with Lyme a safe place to go to receive support and information.
